Have you ever met a Christian who claims that he does not know for sure if he is saved? Have you ever heard a person say “it is impossible to know for sure if a person is going to heaven?” My question is “how can one say they have hope in Christ, while at the same time is unsure about going to be with Him?” Biblical hope is not wishing to be in heaven, rather it is desiring and expecting to be there. Hope for eternal life has to do with knowing for sure that when one dies, he or she will be in Heaven. Being able to say with confidence, “I am going to heaven” is not arrogance, it is a blessing. God wants us to have the blessing of assurance.
While God was walking on the earth (John 1:1,14), He made a statement of assurance to those around Him, and also those who will read about Him in the Bible: he said “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31–32). Can one accomplish what Jesus said? Can one continue in His Word and know the Truth? The answer is “yes”! Though we are not sinlessly perfect, and God knows this (1 John 1:5-10), we can continue in Christ’s words and know the Truth (John 17:17). Consider what apostle John wrote: “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.” (1 John 5:13) Does God want us to know for sure we have eternal life? Absolutely! John says he writes so that people can know, not so that people can be unsure about eternal life. Listen to what Paul wrote and see if he had any doubt in his mind: “For this reason, I also suffer these things; nevertheless, I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day” (2 Timothy 1:12 NKJV). It sounds like Paul gave his all for Christ because he knew and was made sure that eternal life was his.
Are you sure of your soul’s salvation? Are you one who says “I don’t know for sure, but I think I will go to heaven?” Friends, we have 66 books given to us by God himself, to tell us that we can be sure that we are going to Heaven. David wrote “the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple” (Psa. 19:7) Combine this with what Paul said to Timothy: “and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:15 NKJV) If you are unsure, you need to look to God’s word and trust in his promises. Jesus went to prepare a place (John 14:1-3) not for those who doubt that it exists, but for those who know they are forgiven and that upon death or Christ’s second coming, heaven is their home. Have you ever heard or sang the song “Blessed Assurance?” That song is about being sure. When I sing it, it reminds me that I know Jesus is mine! I know that I am saved! I know that Heaven is my home! This is my story, this is my song, praising my savior all the day long, for I know the one I believe in, and I am persuaded that he keeps His promises as I read it in the Bible.
“Now by this, we know that we know Him if we keep His commandments. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”” (1 John 2:3; 5:13; John 8:32 NKJV)
